Basic Rules of Tongits

Each of the three players is dealt 12 cards (the dealer gets 13). On your turn, you draw a card from the deck or pick up the top discard, then discard one card face-up. The goal is to form melds — either sets (three or four cards of the same rank) or runs (three or more consecutive cards of the same suit).

You can also dump cards onto an opponent's meld if they match — this is a key tactical move that reduces your hand count while disrupting their strategy. When a player empties their hand completely, they call "Tongits!" and win the pot outright.

If the deck runs out before anyone calls Tongits, the player with the lowest total point value in their remaining hand wins. Face cards count as 10 points each, Aces as 1, and number cards at face value. Keeping your unmelded cards low is just as important as building melds fast.

The biggest mistake beginners make is holding onto cards hoping for the perfect meld. In Tongits, the deck runs out faster than you think. Lay down your melds as soon as they're valid — even a three-card set reduces your deadwood count and puts pressure on opponents. A partial meld on the table is always better than a perfect hand stuck in your fingers.

The discard pile tells you everything about what your opponents are building. If you see three 7s discarded, no one is building a set of 7s — that's information. Conversely, if a player keeps picking up from the discard, they're chasing a specific meld. Deny them by holding cards they need, even if those cards aren't immediately useful to you.

Dumping cards onto an opponent's meld is powerful — it reduces your hand count and can block their path to Tongits. But dumping just to get rid of high-value cards is a trap. If you dump a King onto someone's set of Kings, you've helped them complete a four-of-a-kind meld, which may accelerate their win. Think two moves ahead before every dump.

Calling "Fight" challenges all players to reveal their hands and compare point totals. It's a high-risk, high-reward move. Call Fight when you're confident your deadwood count is the lowest at the table — typically when you have 5 points or fewer in unmelded cards. Never call Fight if you have more than 15 points in hand; you'll almost certainly lose and pay a penalty.
